THE Public School System’s Second Annual Parent Summit was held on Friday at the Saipan World Resort from 8:30 to 3:30 p.m.
Parents, teachers and student representatives from different middle and high schools shared their concerns regarding education issues and the strategic priorities of PSS.
PTAs from Tinian, Rota, and Saipan were also present as well as the Youth Advisory Panel, a group of selected students from the different schools.
The Head Start Parent Council also participated.
“They will come out with the recommendations for what they would like us to work on,” said Board of Education Chairwoman Lucy Blanco-Maratita.
“From this summit we’ll continue to work on how to get more parents involved as well as how to improve communication between parents, teachers, and students. We want to provide the parents an opportunity to tell us their needs and desires,” she added.
The strategic priorities of PSS are updated yearly.
They are: high student performance, highly qualified faculty and staff, effective and efficient operations, safe and orderly schools, and parent and community partnership, which was added this year.
Its goal is to strengthen family involvement and community support in student learning.
This includes training the parents as teachers to their children.
“This was embedded into the first priority which is high student performance, but I took it out and make it a stand alone strategic priority so that we can see where our strengths are and where are the weaknesses in terms of parent partnership and parent involvement,” Commissioner of Education Rita A. Sablan said.
During the parent panel discussions, teenage pregnancy and bullying on campus were discussed.
